Za’atar spice mix

There are many variations on the za’atar spice blend. Through research, trial and error, I found one I really like and is easy to mix up yourself. Check it out, you might even have all the ingredients at hand already…

Za’atar spice mix

You can buy it ready made, but it's really easy to mix it up yourself! Here's my basic recipe, but feel free to change it up any way you like it best.
Keywords spice mix
Total Time 5 minutes
Course Spice Mix
Cuisine Lebanese, Middle-Eastern

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp sumac
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp ground coriander
  • 1 tbsp thyme
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Put all the ingredients into a container and shake to mix.

Notes

Sometimes I also add a tbsp of oregano, because I read somewhere that the original za’atar thyme variety apparently tastes like something in between of our thyme and oregano.
Optionally, you could add salt (I prefer to salt separately) or chili flakes if you like it spicy.
